Project: Xayaburi HPP – Fish Swimming Performance Study, Mekong River. Xayaburi Hydropower Project, Lao PDR
Client: Xayaburi Power Company, Laos, and AF-Consult Switzerland AG, Switzerland.
Period: 2011 – 2014
Current profiles including water velocities and depth were collected during the Fish Biomass & Fish Migration Study, which included stationary and mobile hydro-acoustic surveys as well as fish catching. The current profiles were measured once every field investigation along the Mekong river transect at the Hydro-Acoustic Study Area. On the basis of fish swimming speed and fish positioning data derived from hydro-acoustic recordings and current profiles, the swimming performance of migratory fishes as well as their preferred water velocities, depth and positioning in the river channel during migration can be estimated. The fish swimming behaviour and performance data on migratory fishes and fish schools is an essential data basis for the proper dimensioning and the design refinements of the fish passing facilities.
