Project: Xayaburi HPP – Baseline Study on Mekong Fish & Fisheries, Mekong River. Xayaburi Hydropower Project, Lao PDR.
Client: Xayaburi Power Company, Laos, and AF-Consult Switzerland AG, Switzerland.
Period: 2011 – 2014
The Baseline Study on Mekong Fish & Fisheries was carried out between 2012 and 2014. The work started by elaborating appropriate fish sampling methods in collaboration with the fish sampling crew of TEAM Consulting Engineering and Management Co. Ltd, Thailand, in order to assess the migratory fish community at the Xayaburi Hydroelectric Power Project and to follow up fish sampling in the framework of the Fish Biomass & Migration Study 2012-2013. In the following, the fish biodiversity potentially present at the Xayaburi HPP Site was assessed. The assessment was based on fish catch data collected so far in the framework of the development of the Xayaburi HPP, in particular during the Fish Biomass & Migration Study and the Environmental Impact Assessment, and the Project relevant fish data from secondary sources like fish databases and publications. On the basis of the Fish Biodiversity Assessment and a predefined criteria based selection process, the Design Guidance Species List was deduced, which will serve as a basis for the design refinements of the fish passing facilities.
